Dhruva was a five-year-old prince who, hurt by his stepmother's words, left the palace, meditated on Vishnu in the forest with total steadiness, and was rewarded with a kingdom on earth and, after his life, a permanent place in the sky as the Pole Star, Dhruva tara (ध्रुव तारा). His story is told in the fourth canto of the Bhagavata Purana and in the Vishnu Purana.

Long before the Pole Star had a name in any textbook, Indian grandmothers were telling children about Dhruva, the little prince whose devotion was so firm that he became the one star in the sky that never moves.
Dhruv tara ki kahani in short (संक्षेप में)
Bhakt Dhruv ki kahani: who was Dhruva?
King Uttanapada, a son of Svayambhuva Manu, had two queens. Suruchi was his favourite, and her son was Uttama. Suniti was the elder queen, and her son was Dhruva.
Why did Dhruva leave home?
One day five-year-old Dhruva saw Uttama sitting on their father's lap and tried to climb up too. Suruchi stopped him. If you want to sit on the king's lap, she said, you should have been born from my womb; go and worship the Lord for that. The king said nothing.
Dhruva ran to his mother in tears. Suniti did not curse Suruchi. She told her son that the hurtful words held a true idea: if you want a place no one can take away, seek it from the Lord, who is everyone's refuge. That was all Dhruva needed. He left the palace for the forest.
What did Narada teach Dhruva?
On the way the sage Narada met him and tested him. You are only a child, Narada said, and these austerities are hard even for great sages; go home. Dhruva refused. Seeing his resolve, Narada taught him to meditate on Vishnu with the mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya (ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय) and sent him to Madhuvana on the banks of the Yamuna.
The tapas that shook the worlds
Dhruva's tapas grew stricter month by month: fruit every few days, then leaves, then only water, then only air, until he stood on one foot, completely still. The Bhagavata Purana says that when he held his breath, the breath of the whole universe was held with him, and the devas ran to Vishnu for help. Back in the palace, King Uttanapada was full of remorse.
What did Dhruva ask for when Vishnu appeared?
Vishnu appeared before the child. Dhruva had prepared words of praise, but now he could not speak. Vishnu touched his cheek with his conch, and praise poured out of him. He was granted a kingdom on earth and, at the end of his life, Dhruvaloka, the fixed point around which the stars turn.
Then comes the most human part of the story: Dhruva felt regret. He had met the Lord face to face and asked for a kingdom, which he compared to a poor man asking an emperor for a handful of broken rice. The child who had left home hurt came back wiser.
Homecoming, anger and forgiveness
His father welcomed him with joy and later made him king. But when a Yaksha killed his brother Uttama in the Himalayas, Dhruva's grief turned to fury and he waged war on the Yakshas. His grandfather Manu came to calm him, reminding him that anger was not worthy of a devotee. Dhruva made peace, Kubera, lord of the Yakshas, blessed him, and after a long reign he rose to the Pole Star.
What does the story of Dhruva teach?
- Hurt can become determination instead of bitterness. Suniti turned an insult into a direction.
- Steadiness matters more than age. A child's single-mindedness outshone sages who had practised for years.
- What you ask for shows who you are. Dhruva's regret about asking for a kingdom is a gentle lesson about wanting less.
- Even devotees lose their temper. Listening to wise elders is part of the path.
