Bhakt Prahlad Ki Kahani: Narasimha, Holika and Holi

Bhakt Prahlad ki kahani: Hiranyakashipu's boon, Holika and the fire, and Narasimha bursting from the pillar at dusk. The Narasimha avatar story explained.

Prahlad was the young son of the asura king Hiranyakashipu who stayed devoted to Vishnu even when his father tried to kill him, and Narasimha, the half-man, half-lion avatar, burst from a pillar at dusk to protect him and end Hiranyakashipu without breaking a single condition of his boon. The bonfire of Holika Dahan, lit on the night before Holi, remembers one part of this story: the fire that burned Holika and spared Prahlad.

A crowned asura king in red and gold sits on a lion-armed golden throne in a vast pillared palace, guards behind him

Behind that fire is the story of a small boy who would not stop saying Vishnu's name, and a father who would stop at nothing to silence him. It is told most fully in the seventh canto of the Bhagavata Purana.

Bhakt Prahlad ki kahani in short (संक्षेप में)

What was Hiranyakashipu's boon?

Hiranyakashipu, king of the asuras, hated Vishnu, who had killed his brother Hiranyaksha. He performed severe tapas until Brahma appeared and offered a boon. Since immortality could not be given, Hiranyakashipu chose his words carefully. He could not be killed by any being Brahma had created, by man or animal, inside or outside, by day or night, on the ground or in the sky, by any weapon. He believed he had closed every door.

Who was Prahlad?

His son Prahlad had heard about Vishnu before he was even born. While Hiranyakashipu was away doing tapas, his queen Kayadhu stayed in the ashram of the sage Narada, and the child in her womb absorbed Narada's teachings.

When Prahlad was sent to study with the asura teachers, he learned his lessons, then taught his friends something else: the nine ways of devotion, navadha bhakti (नवधा भक्ति), from hearing and singing the Lord's name to remembering him, serving him, and finally offering oneself completely.

How did Hiranyakashipu try to kill Prahlad?

Hiranyakashipu tried to turn his son, and then to kill him. In the Bhagavata Purana, Prahlad is attacked with weapons, thrown before elephants and serpents, poisoned, and thrown from a height. Each time he is untouched, and each time he holds no hatred for his father.

Holika Prahlad ki kahani: what happened in the fire?

The best-known of these ordeals, especially in north India, is Holika. Hiranyakashipu's sister was said to be protected from fire. She sat in a blazing pyre with Prahlad in her lap. The fire consumed Holika and left Prahlad unharmed.

This episode comes from later Puranic and folk tradition rather than the Bhagavata Purana itself, and it is the reason the bonfire of Holika Dahan is lit before Holi: the triumph of devotion over arrogance.

Is God in this pillar too?

At last Hiranyakashipu roared at his son: where is this Vishnu of yours? Is he in this pillar? Prahlad answered that the Lord is everywhere, so yes, he is in the pillar too. The king struck the pillar with his fist.

Narasimha avatar story: how did Narasimha kill Hiranyakashipu?

From the pillar burst Narasimha, neither man nor animal but half lion and half man. It was dusk, neither day nor night. He carried Hiranyakashipu to the threshold of the hall, neither inside nor outside, laid him across his lap, neither ground nor sky, and killed him with his claws, which are no weapon. Every condition of the boon was respected, and every door Hiranyakashipu thought he had closed was opened.

A prayer without bargaining

Narasimha's anger was so fierce that even the devas were afraid to approach him. Brahma sent the child. Prahlad sat before the Lord and prayed, and Narasimha grew calm. When he offered Prahlad any boon, Prahlad asked only that no desire for reward should ever arise in his heart, and that his father be forgiven. Narasimha assured him that his father, and generations of his family, were purified by having such a son.

What does Prahlad's story teach?

  • Faith does not need to shout. Prahlad never fought his father; he simply would not stop.
  • Arrogance plans for everything except humility. Hiranyakashipu's boon was clever, and still not enough.
  • Devotion is not a deal. Offered anything, Prahlad asked for nothing for himself.
  • Forgive even those who hurt you. His last request was for the father who had tried to kill him.
